The Winning Poker Network stepped up to the plate. In early April, The Beast changes to a Beauty—perhaps the best promotion I’ve ever seen in online poker.
To the point, the players have paid for the Beast payouts. For many players, this payment was increased rake. Having green numbers in your database (especially at micro games) was out of reach for most players. Now, WPN is footing the bill for the Beast payouts, without increasing the rake. The result should be fantastic for players.
For anyone in the leaderboard, WPN offers less rake than anywhere online (that I know of anyway). For the current micro players, the rake reduction is likely over 60%. A huge boost for win rates.
The Beast is now more similar to a rake race. Therefore, the top of the leaderboard will likely be small/mid stakes players instead of micro players. This pushes the better grinders to stakes respective to their skills; making life even better for micro players.
The Beast payout should remain similar for two reasons. First, now all games contribute to the Beast instead of only 25nl+ and 4-handed+. Second, I anticipate increased traffic.
I’ve not decided how I’ll respond to the changes. I may continue to push every round for first. However, an attractive alternative now is to play at a more controlled pace. I anticipate the ability to have green numbers at a 20-25 table pace. If I put in 20-30 hours of that pace, I’ll likely place inside the top 10 on the leaderboard. The payout for the two strategies may be similar. Even if strategy B is somewhat less money, the reduction in time and energy may be worth the reduced pay. I’ll have to play with the two ideas to see the results and make my decision after seeing how everything shakes out.
Regardless, hats off to WPN. See you all at the tables.
